Privacy Policy

Last updated: 4 November 2026

This policy explains how the Yega Orutooro Initiative collects, uses and protects personal information when you visit yegaorutooro.org, contact us or buy our learning resources.

Who we are

Yega Orutooro is a Rutooro language and cultural heritage initiative. The data controllers responsible for your personal information are its co-founders, Julian Businge and Tracy Guma, who act as joint controllers. You can contact us about anything in this policy at hello@yegaorutooro.org.

What information we collect

  • Information you send us. If you email us, for example with a question, a partnership enquiry or a request to join the Starter Pack waiting list, we receive your name, email address and anything you include in your message.
  • Course purchases. Our course is sold through Etsy. Etsy processes your order and payment and shares with us the details needed to fulfil it, such as your name and order information. We never see your card details. Etsy’s own privacy policy applies to your purchase.
  • Technical information. Our website host, Hostinger, keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and pages visited) to keep the website secure and working.

How we use your information

  • To reply to your questions and enquiries.
  • To tell you when the Family Starter Pack is released, if you asked to join the waiting list.
  • To provide support for the course you bought.
  • To keep our website secure.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Our lawful basis

Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR), we rely on: your consent for the Starter Pack waiting list (you can withdraw it at any time); our legitimate interests in responding to enquiries and running a secure website; and contract where we support a course you have purchased.

Who we share it with

We use trusted service providers to run Yega Orutooro: Google (email), Hostinger (website hosting), Etsy (course sales) and YouTube (course video delivery). Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they use safeguards recognised under UK law. We only share information with others where the law requires it or with your permission.

How long we keep it

  • Waiting list: until the Starter Pack is released and we have told you, or until you ask to be removed.
  • Enquiries and partnership correspondence: up to 2 years after our last contact.
  • Course support records: as long as needed to support your purchase, and as required for tax and accounting purposes.

Cookies

This website uses essential cookies needed for it to work. Our Learn Rutooro page includes an embedded YouTube video; when you play it, YouTube (Google) may set its own cookies and collect information about your viewing, under Google’s privacy policy. YouTube cookies are only set if you accept them through our cookie banner; until then the video is replaced by a placeholder. You can change your choice at any time. See our Cookie Policy for details. We do not use advertising cookies of our own.

Your rights

You have the right to ask for a copy of your information, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw your consent. To make a request, email hello@yegaorutooro.org. We will respond within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to resolve your concern first.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
